Issues

One issue facing the St. Louis area is inadequate housing, lack of proper medical attention, and poor education for children. Neighborhood Houses address all the issues. 75% of the children from the center come from single-parent families, 95% of the children are African-American and 80% of the families earn less than $20,000.00 annually.

This interested me because I did not realize how much some people in the inner city are struggling with money and care for there children.

Another issue facing St. Louis is the number of serious crimes committed in St. Louis. In 2009 there were 103,000 serious crimes that took place in St. Louis. The crime victim advocacy center tries to help the people who were hurt by these crimes and to return to normal life. This interested me because I did not know that there were that many serious crimes in the St. Louis area.

The final issue that I found was the amount of domestic violence cases in the St. Louis area. 82% of people were African- American. The people also had an average income of $10,000 or less. Also 77% of the children who were brought to center after domestic violence were 10 years old or younger. The Women’s Safe House provides shelter after domestic abuse for these people.
The statistics interested me on this issue.
